Winter Fitness Tips – Anastasia Pastukhova

You know what they say; Summer bodies are made in the winter. Unfortunately, the combination of shorter, colder, darker days and an overload on Christmas treats does not really help. Just like a lot of people, I sometimes struggle to stay motivated during the holiday season. But it’s so important to keep your body fit and moving, and there are so many ways you can do so! Here are a couple of thigs you can do to stay fit this winter. Below are my winter fitness tips;

Winter fitness tips

1. Try a winter sport

If you don’t feel like going to the gym, there are still many ways to stay active this winter. Winter weather offers a big variety of activities you can try out with your friends or family. Try skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating or give ice-hockey a go.

2. Make sure you get enough vitamins

With the colder weather the risks of getting ill are much higher, therefore, it is extra important to boost your immune system with enough vitamins. Make sure you eat loads of fruits and vegetables and also get enough vitamin D.

3. Get a trainer or workout with a buddy

It is much easier to stay committed to your workout routine if you have someone counting on you to show up. If you work out together with someone it can be more fun and challenging as well.

4. Plan your workouts

Plan specific days and times for your workouts and have a plan for what you are going to do each time. If you make working out a part of your weekly routine it will be much easier to stick to it.

5. Find healthy substitutions for your favourite winter foods

Most winter foods taste great but are quite calorie dense and full of fat. Try experimenting in the kitchen! Take a recipe you like and figure out what you can do to make it healthier. What could you substitute? How do you add health benefits while maintaining the great flavour? You’ll be surprised how many delicious recipes are actually super healthy.

6. Try home workouts

In case you really don’t want to go out in the cold, and much rather stay in your pyjamas all day, this is a tip for you. There are a lot of workouts you can do with no equipment and from the comfort of your own home. Very convenient indeed.

7. Go for a walk

Aim to walk for at least 30 minutes each day. Try walk to work instead of taking the bus, take the long route to the grocery store or bring you family along for an after-dinner walk! Workouts don’t always have to be super intense, as long as you keep your body moving.

8. Have the right kit

If you are heading for a workout outdoors, make sure you have the right activewear. Think thermal leggings, hats, bodywarmers, etc. Not only will it make your workout more comfortable, it will also reduce your risks of catching a cold. However, this tip is not only for outdoors; even if you are just going to the gym, investing in some new workout clothes can help you with your motivation. It’s hard not to take your new gear for a spin.

9. Set a spring fitness goal

Spend the winter training for your first marathon or join a dance competition. Whatever you chose your fitness goal to be, sometimes a deadline is all you need to stay motivated.

10. Cut yourself some slack

Since it is the holiday season, you probably will indulge a little more than usual, and that is okay! Try to stay as active and healthy as you can, but don’t beat yourself up over it. Enjoy the holiday season and remember that it is okay to treat yourself sometimes.
